Since the late 1970’s, California has been leading the way for residential solar and has traditionally dominated the solar market. Most of the big name, traditional, solar companies, like SunPower and, most recognizable, Tesla Energy, were started and are still based in California. In 2021, America saw a huge increase in solar projects and installations, with Texas leading the rapid growth for the first time. While California still has more cumulative solar installations, Texas is driving the pack to catch up.
In 2020, Texas added a total of 3,426 MW of solar installations, coming in second to California’s 3,917 MW. However, Texas made a big leap in 2021, nearly doubling their installation total to 6,061 MW of solar power, which represented 25% of the total capacity installed in all of the US! California came in second with 3,640 MW added, just over half of Texas’ contribution.
As of Quarter 2 reporting by Solar Energy Industries Association, Texas ranks 1st in growth projections over the next 5 years. We are projected to add a total of 40,136 MW, far extending California’s projections of 17,447 MW
