Our customers have been asking us: Why do solar systems shut off when the power goes off? Will my home still be powered by solar when the power goes off?
These are two common question we get asked a lot. It’s an important thought, especially in the Houston area where Hurricane puts us all on edge for half the year!
Most residential solar systems are still tied to the electrical grid for their area. This is to allow power to still come to the property at night or during cloudy days. It also allows overproduced energy to go back to the grid.
Because of this, all solar systems tied into the grid have an automatic switch that switches the system off when the grid goes down. This is a safety precaution for workers while they are working on the downed grid. If solar systems were still on, and the systems sent overproduced electricity back through the grid, the workers would be at risk of injury.
If you are worried about backup power, we always suggest generators! We have several options we recommend and you will be all set for hurricane season or another record freeze!
